Film Review Cowboys & Aliens May Be Someting, But It’s Not Art
Genre Review Alien Invasion or Outlaw Redemption? Why not Both?
There are a number of ways that a bad movie can become great. One is that the filmmakers and actors be totally sincere. Another is when there is an obvious disparity in the level of acting or production. There is also the accelerating ridiculousness factor.
All of these are found in Cowboys & Aliens. You can feel the serious tone, the obvious sense that they thought they were making a good movie. There is, of course, the sense that Harrison Ford is acting in one movie while everyone else is acting in a completely different flick.
The bad guys are also, though flat, despicable. Enough so that we root for them to be wiped out at the end. There is also testimonial evidence, people who have sat through the movie and insist it is great, even when you point out that it is obviously terrible.
Still, this doesn’t have the great badness of, say, Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, so I can only give it 4 out of 5.
