Placing Event Horizon in Context

Event Horizon appears, at first glance, to be a science fiction movie. Taken this way, it has some of the atmosphere of Alien along with a real sense of isolation that belongs to deep space. But as the movie progresses, the science part of science fiction is slowly replaced by the supernatural–which hints at the true genre for this movie.

The ship in which most of the action takes place is much more a place than a ship, with a modernized medieval architecture more appropriate in a horror movie. This is a new take on the haunted house genre.

As such, it works pretty well. You slowly feel the dread spreading, along with the twisted, underlying logic of it all. The supernatural pries at, and unearths our failings. Then, it bores in through our psychological weaknesses.
