Starship Troopers Can be Cheesy and Full of Plot Holes

There are a lot of problems and plot holes in Starship Troopers, enough to enjoy if you are looking for that kind of thing. There is a cheesy vibe to everything, especially the human relationships. The love triangle is formulaic, and the friendships all follow standard paths.

You can also question the physics, pretty easily. The map shows an asteroid being launched from one side of the galaxy to the other, without even the benefit of its own power. Also bugs that can not only launch, but accurately target some kind of emission from their ass at ships in orbit are kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

Many of the military tactics are non-sensical. We have far more advanced weapons and strategies today than are being used on the bugs. Also flying large fleets of ships in close order through anti-aircraft fire makes zero sense, especially when everything they do could have been done from higher orbits.

None of that takes away from the movie but if it weren’t such an effective satire, or if it wasn’t just so much fun, these things would add up pretty quickly. The sequels show that the concept without Verhoeven’s vision doesn’t really work.
